To maintain a healthy body, we need a wide range of good quality nutrients. There is no doubt that the best way to consume these nutrients is to eat a healthy diet.
However, there are many factors that can adversely affect our bodies and increase the need for essential nutrients:
- Overwork and not enough sleep
- An increased level of physical activity
- An increased level of stress
- Tiredness and fatigue
- Less than adequate eating habits
- Too much alcohol and caffeine
- Cigarettes
- Skipping meals
- Processed foods
- Illness and disease
- A run down immune system
- Age related problems and disorders
- Degenerative diseases
- A high quality multivitamin and mineral formulation can help to fill the gaps
The best time to take a multivitamin and mineral supplement is with breakfast (or the first meal of the day). They should never be taken on an empty stomach.
If a multivitamin and mineral supplement is taken on an empty stomach, the ingredients will not be absorbed as well as if the supplement is taken with food. If a multivitamin and mineral supplement is taken without food, it may even cause an upset stomach.
1. Make sure it has all the vitamins
A good multivitamin and mineral supplement should include:
- Vitamin A (Retinyl Acetate)
- Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol)
- Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)
- Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
- Vitamin B3 (Nicotinamide)
- Vitamin B5 (Calcium Pantothenate)
- Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine]
- Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin)
- Folic Acid
- Biotin [Vitamin H)
- Vitamin C (Calcium Ascorbate)
- Vitamin E (Preferably Natural)
- Vitamin K (Phytomenadione)
NOTE:- If a multivitamin and mineral formulation is to be used with Warfarin, Clopidogrel (Plavix or Iscover) or cardiovascular medications the vitamin E, vitamin K and coenzyme Q10 should be omitted.
2. The importance of b-complex balance
Make sure that it has all eight of the B-complex vitamins: (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, Folic Acid and Biotin).
Make sure that they are all present in the correct ratio to each other.
The dosage level for vitamin B1 and vitamin B2 will set the overall strength for the supplement. In the Myadec formulations, these dosage levels are set at:
- vitamin B1 15mg
- vitamin B2 15mg
the other dosage levels should then be set in the correct ratio to vitamin B1 and vitamin B2.
In the Myadec formulations, these dosage levels are set at:
- Vitamin B3 35mg
- Vitamin B5 25mg
- Vitamin B6 25mg
- Vitamin B12 100mcg
- Folic Acid 500mcg
- Biotin 150cmg
This ensures an overall balance for the b-complex vitamins.
3. Make sure that the multivitamin and mineral supplement has a full range of important minerals and trace elements.
A good formulation will include:
- Iron
- Magnesium
- Calcium
- Potassium
- Phosphorus
- Iodine
- Zinc
- Manganese
- Copper
- Chromium
- Molybdenum
- Selenium
- Boron
- Silica
NOTE:- If a multivitamin and mineral formulation is to be used with Warfarin, Clopidogrel (Plavix or Iscover) or cardiovascular medications the potassium should be omitted.
4. Make sure that the multivitamin and mineral supplement has a wide range of antioxidants.
A good formulation will include:
- Vitaniin C (water soluble)
- Vitamin E (fat soluble)
- Vitamin A (fat soluble)
- Betacarotene
- Lycopene
- Bioflavonoids
- Hesperidin
- Selenium (as Selenomethione)
5. Make sure that the multivitamin and mineral formulation contains important supplements and co-factors that work in conjunction with the vitamins and minerals.
The Myadec formulations contain:
Choline Bitartrate and Inositol
These are co-factors that work with the B-complex vitamins.
Lysine
This is an essential amino acid - necessary for growth and development of protein and hormone structures?
Betacarotene and Lycopene
These are both carotenoid compounds that work as antioxidants in the body. Betacrotene is the orange colourant in carrots, appricots and Lycopene is the red colourant in tomatos. Betacrotene is a natural precursor for vitamin A and is converted to vitamin A as the body needs it.
Citrus bioflavonoids and Hesperidin
These are both flavonoid compounds that work with vitamin C in the body?
They are both antioxidants and are present in citrus fruits.
Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 is present in every cell in our body and is important for cellular energy production.
Coenzyme Q10 is important for heart muscle function.
Coenzyme Q10 levels are depleted with exercise and decrease as our body ages.
The Myadec range has two multivitamin and mineral formulations:

The main antioxidants are:
- Vitamin C (Water soluble)

- Hesperidin
- Selenium (Selenomethionine)
The role of an antioxidant is to protect body tissues from oxidation. Oxygen is critical for life to exist, but when it is being transported and utilised in the body we do not want it to oxidise the body tissues as well.
Antioxidants also play a very important role by protecting the body from free radical damage.
Free radicals are highly reactive atoms or molecules that can accumulate in cells and cause damage over time. Antioxidants will limit or prevent the damage that is caused by free radicals in the body.
In almost every case, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and antioxidants work together in combination.
For this reason, it is important that the base formulation for any level of supplementation should be a good Multivitamin and Mineral formulation -taken with food (preferably breakfast).
If a higher level of any individual supplement (e.g. Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Co-enzyme Q10, Fish Oil or Evening Primrose Oil) is required then this should be taken with the Multivitamin and Mineral supplement.
Vitamins, minerals, trace elements and antioxidants do not occur as single components in food. They are found in conjunction with co-factors that will improve their absorption and utilisation in the body.
For this reason, two factors are important:
- Always take a supplement with food (preferably breakfast).
- Always make sure that a Multivitamin and Mineral supplemented is formulated to include co-factors.
A good formulation will include:
- Coenzyme Q10
- Choline Bitartrate
- Inositol
- Lysine
- Betacarotene
- Lycopene
- Citrus Bioflavonoids
- Hesperidin
At a supplementary level, the answer to this question is no. Men and women both need all of the vitamins, minerals, trace elements and antioxidants.
In some cases (e.g. hormone and fluid balance in females), a higher level of a particular supplement may be desired. This extra supplementation should always be taken with a well formulated Multivitamin and Mineral supplement.
Myadec is formulated without the addition of medicinal herbal ingredients. This is to minimise the possibility of adverse reactions with other medicines.
The production of energy in the body is a very complex process involving many enzymes, coenzymes, nutrients and oxygen.
Vitamins, minerals and trace elements work in the energy production process. They either work with or they are part of the enzyme and coenzyme structures.
The Adrenal gland has two roles in the body in relation to stress. The first role is the production of Adrenalin - which allows the body to react to stress.
The second role is the production of natural Cortisol - which is used for repair and recovery from stress.
Vitamin B5 is very important for the repair and recovery roles of the Adrenal gland.
A normal balance of minerals is essential for regulating blood pressure. Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium and Sodium all work together and need to be in the correct balance with each other.
Natural foods have the correct balance of minerals. The more that we process foods, the more we will upset the normal balance of Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium and Sodium - usually with a shift to Sodium levels that are too high.
